Student Biography:

Taylor Hartman is a fifth year student at The Pennsylvania State University and will be graduating in May, 2016 with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree (B.A.E.) and is focusing in the Structural Option.

Taylor's professional career experience extends from the office to the field.  In the summer of 2011 after graduating high school, Taylor started work with E.H.C. Associates as a supervising intern in the field of environmental hazards and demolition.  During his summers and breaks from college, he worked and gained experience dealing with construction documents, proposals, and job documentation.  Taylor dealt with overseeing the process of work on site and supervising/following the job procedures for all types of environmental hazards removal.  He interacted with residential, commercial, and school district client types throughout all stages of the project.  Another facet of environmental work, that he was in charge of, was air sample testing for asbestos and mold abatement work.  This job entailed the collection and cross reading of air samples, in order to ensure quality and safety of work being completed on a project.

Having a very thorough background in field work, the knowledge of office structural design was limited until May of 2015.   Taylor worked as engineering intern for Baker, Ingram & Associates.  He was able to gain more experience in the office of a structural design firm.  He was shown the process of structural design for all phases of the job project as well as working with all parties involved in the design process.  He gained competency in many design software’s for most structural materials and connections and all material code references.  Having these few months of experience in the office of a structural design firm helped to strengthen overall understanding and decision-making in the design of a structure.

Taylor now continues his college work for his 5th year, focusing on remaining credit coursework and the design/development of his full year Thesis project.  He is involved with the Structural Engineers Association (SEA) and a AISC Student Member, AISC 2015 Steel Conference Attendee, and will be attending the AISC 2016 Steel Conference.
